History of Pineville, North Carolina

Pineville offers a small town feel in a larger metropolitan area. With less than 8000 residents, the town boasts outstanding medical facilities, schools, telephone and gas companies, and one of the largest shopping districts in the region. What was once called Morrow’s Turnout because of the Meadowlands where work animals, past their prime, could be “turned out” to pasture, Pineville is now a vibrant community. Besides its meadow, Pineville was also once a mule-trading center during the Carolina gold rush. Of somewhat higher distinction, though, Pineville is the birthplace of the 11th president of the U.S., James Polk. His birthplace is now a historic site.

When the Charlotte and Columbia Railroad came through the town in the mid-1800s, the town got its first boost into modernity, along with the new name.  The town later became part of the region’s prosperous textile industry.

Today, the area known as “Old Pineville” is a charming tribute to days gone by, with a flourishing area of boutiques and restaurants. Much of the rest of Pineville is filled with some of the largest shopping and commercial areas between Charlotte and Rock Hill.  An 8-million square foot, retail shopping district includes a 1 million sq. ft. shopping mall called Carolina Place.  If a day outdoors is more to your liking, though, a beautifully restored park is available with walking trails, picnic areas and shelters, playgrounds, and top-quality ball fields and facilities.
